Swedish Body Massage
Holistic, or Swedish body massage, is the classic Western style of massage that was developed by a Swedish physiologist, Henri Peter Ling at the University of Stockholm in 1812. Swedish body massage uses softer strokes on the bonier and more delicate parts of the body, and stronger strokes where there is thicker muscle coverage. This sensitivity to pressure makes it ideal for relaxation. Not only does it help to relax but Swedish massage therapy also improves blood circulation as well as stimulates the skin and nervous system. It also soothes the nerves and reduces stress on both the emotional and physical level.
Swedish body massage utilizes a variety of massage techniques and strokes:
- Effleurage - long, gliding strokes
- Petrissage - kneading of individual muscles
- Friction- the most intense part of the massage therapy
- Tapotement - hacking or tapping
- Vibration - done as a final stroke which causes further relaxation
A Swedish massage therapy definitely feels wonderful to receive as well as relaxing and invigorating!
